Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers (by Dane Ortlund)
This book goes above and beyond WHAT Jesus said and did, to reveal WHO he is. Christ’s overwhelming compassion and love for His people will soothe the souls of any who are feeling weary and broken, or who may be wondering if God really cares. A deep book, one to be savoured. - Jenny Shannon |
Enjoying God (by Tim Chester)
What does it mean to find joy in God? We know that our relationship with God is based entirely on God’s grace, and our union with God is all his work – but our communion with God is a two-way relationship. How does this look in your life, as you journey through times of busyness, sadness, loneliness, heartache, happiness and contentment? In short, easy-to-read chapters, Tim Chester encourages us to see that in our everyday lives there is opportunity to not only grow in our love and knowledge of God, but to find joy in his provision, generosity, grace and presence. I particularly enjoyed the challenge to action at the end of each chapter – suggesting something small that could be done to change my focus in the coming week. The reflection questions at the end of each chapter are also helpful, making this book a wonderful resource for not only the individual, but for a group of people meeting together to encourage one another. - Beth Shaw |
Growing in Gratitude - rediscovering the joy of a thankful heart (by Mary K. Mohler)
This short book of just 130 pages is a beautiful and practical look at gratitude or thankfulness. It goes beyond popular mottos and self-help advice as it reflects deeply on what the Bible teaches. Interestingly, in the second section of the book, Mohler delves into four hindrances to gratitude. Two that struck me were doubt, and the danger that our gratitude towards the Lord might be diminished when those we love reject the gospel. She helpfully walks through these hindrances offering wise counsel and hope. A great read! - Christine Bayley |
